2002 Explorer fuel pressure problems

Hello all, Here is my situation. 2002 Explorer 4.0. Replaced fuel pump. 3 weeks later, service codes 171 and 174 pop up. I replace the fuel filter and clean the MAF sensor. Codes still pop up saying lean bank. Now it has trouble starting and runs very rough. Rough to the point that I can't drive it, it acts like it is running out of gas. Ran pressure test. With engine off but key on, the gauge does not move. I get it started and it's max reading is 20psi. What would be my next step? Do I need to replace the fuel pressure damper? Or is this more of a regulator issue?

Thanks for the help, I am at a dead end.

Greg

Install the pressure gauge again, prime pump (key on 3-4 times), what is pressure??

Pinch return line from FPR (fuel Pressure Regulator), what pressure??

Once pressurized, key off, does pressure hold at least 1 min??? ... Philip

P0171 and P0174 indicate that both banks are running lean. While this could be a fuel issue, assuming you don't have a fuel pressure tester since you haven't already checked fuel pressure, I'd be checking for a vacuum leak. Make sure the intake air tube is in good shape and securely connected at the throttle body. Also check all vacuum hoses and the PCV elbow (assuming that's still used in 2002). You might try unplugging the MAF sensor electrical connector to see if that allows the engine to smooth out. If so, that would further suggest to me it's not a fuel issue but rather a vacuum leak.

The PO reported
Ran pressure test. With engine off but key on, the gauge does not move. I get it started and it's max reading is 20psi.
If his readings are true that would account for the lean codes..... He has to verify the fuel system....... Philip

Oops, yep, I'm not sure how I missed that. I obviously stopped reading too soon.

Well, it turns out the fuel pump that I installed failed. The first time, I only replaced the pump. This time I replaced the whole fuel pump module. Now it runs great. I am getting pretty good at the installation, just hope to never do it again!

New problem that is probably related. After the first fuel pump replacement, the fuel gauge would not go higher than 1/2 tank, but would read accurately from 1/2 tank down to empty. Now after the second replacement, the gauge only goes to about 1/3 full. It seems to move around slowly between empty and 1/3, but the tank is probably 3/4 full. Please tell me I don't need to get inside the tank again? If so, I will probably just deal with it and keep track of miles...

Give it a bit. The fuel gauge on my 2004 Aviator takes about 4 hours to report full after I fill up the tank. I didn't have this issue on my 2004 Mountaineer so I'm not sure what's causing the hysteresis. See if yours reports more accurately after a few hours.

The fuel gauge relies on a good ground and a smooth acting float to register properly.... Philip
