I don't know how to describe my exhaust tone, but it's....unique. I got a custom exhaust system built, a Y-Pipe with a flowmaster muffler (Not sure what series). My cat is hollowed out. Basically, what I'm trying to say, is my exhaust sounds different from most the trucks out on the road. Frankly, it doesn't seem as deep or as loud. It's loud, don't get me wrong, but it sounds a lot different than a lot of these guys out there with their Chevys and their Dodges (Even Fords) with their flowmaster exhaust systems. Just curious if anyone knows why mine wouldn't be as deep. My exhaust has a more metally, classic muscle car type sound to it. Does EFI vs Carb change the tone or anything. Just curious. My engine is a 351 H.O.

From what I've been told, the exhaust tips make the most difference in tone. The larger the diameter, the deeper the tone. I think length makes a difference too but I'm not sure.

It is probably just the series of flowmaster. You should go to flowmasters website, they have sound samples. You could listen to them and see if you can hear the one that sounds closest to yours.

My exhaust sounds similar to what you are describing. I have a 40 series Original SI/DO on my 351w with no cat... At idle its gurgly and kinda deep/loud but when I'm cruising it sounds like what you described. I'm sure from the outside its sounds deeper and louder like what you want it to be. I let my dad drive my truck around when I first got it done and it sounds a lot different to me than when I drive it with the windows rolled down.
