Thought my son's 2001 Expedition 4wd had a torn cv boot since there was oil everywhere. Got it up on a lift today and CV boots look good but it was slightly low of power steering fluid and there appears to be a leak at the seal of the steering gear box. Two shops told me they don't repair seals just change out the whole box.
How hard is it to change out the steering gear box? Local mechanic says he will do the whole job for $550 including all fluids and alignment. Auto parts dealer wants $159 for the steering box part alone.
How hard is it to change out the steering gear box?
That answer would depend on your skill level and your cache of tools. I've attached a PDF of the removal/installation instructions if that helps you out.
I replaced mine and I don't recall needing any special tools other than some $%#$% words when trying to remove the power steering lines from the steering box.
OK...so the repair shop replacing the steering gear box says neither of the two boxes fit this Expedition. Claims he ordered it via the VIN and it did not fit. After getting five or six Ford steering boxes he says the only one that fit the splines correctly was from an F150. That is what he put in.
Does this make sense? Expedition seems to steer fine now.
