Are these trucks made to shake a little at highway speed? I had the rotors replaced, the loose ball joint replaced, tires rotated, an alignment done, and although each thing seems to make it a little better i still have a vibration at 60-65. The only thing i can think left to do is have the tires balanced but they only have maybe 15000 miles on them. I dunno how long it usually takes before they need to be balanced, but they're only six months old. BTW doesn't seem to be coming through steering just truck rattleing.
Also since i got the truck on the right side there is a thunking noise when u hit bumps, it seems to reverberate through the floor board when you hit a bump, i can't feel i therefore i forget about it but most people mention it, the exhaust system isn't lose and i've had it in the shop several times recently replacing parts in that area (ball joints, rotors etc.) and the shop guy never says anything else looks messed up because I've been trying to get him to get rid of this damn vibration.
I feel your pain. My 94 does the same thing at highway speeds. I have replaced all of my u-joints wheel bearings, tires, shocks and had the tires balanced about 50 times it seems. My truck just started shaking about a month and a half ago after my new tires were installed. They swear the tires are balanced, so I am in search of the same answer.
As for the thud, do you have a front sway bar? I am in need of new sway bar links and mine makes the same thud on the same side so that may be your problem.
Please post if you find what makes your vibration go away.
broken coil spring that is what was wrong with mine i have not had steering shimmy since i installed my new coil and the thunk was the two pieces "jumping" across each other. look real close at the top loops.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Nov-02 AT 07:26 PM (EST)]sounds like radius arm bushings to me.
what makes me think this is the rattle when you hit a pothole.
also, bad radius arm bushings allow the front axle to move back and forth a little bit, which could account for your vibration at speed.
hope it helps,
eden
PS, the right side tends to go first, because the catalitic converter is right there, and the heat off that thing is tremendous.
One other thing you could take a look at is the driveshaft itself. I know you said you replaced the u-joints. Maybe the driveshaft somhow got out of balance and is causing a vibration only at those specific speeds. Hope this helps.
turned out to be the tires causing the vibe, still haven't figured out the thump, don't wanna replace the radius arm bushings because I wanna get a lift in a few months, would seem wasteful ya know?
