Question Headers

I posted this question before, but received no answer. My engine comes out next week for the rebuild, so please someone help me out. I have a 61 Unibody with a Ford ( of course ) 400 and C-6. Has anyone put headers on this combo and if so which ones ?

Headers

I'm not sure if I can be of much help to you, but I'll try. I too have a 400/C6 combo in my 64 F100. I have headers but I'm not sure who manufactured them because I picked them up from a bone yard before the doner (late 70's 4X4) was finally put to rest. The reason I have headers from a 4X4 is because I used perches from a late 70's 4X4 to mount my 400. How are you mounting yours? Are you using an aftermarket cross member? If you use perches like I did, I think you need to have headers for a 4X4 so they will clear the perches. One downfall to this is that the collector on the drivers side header will drop lower than the passenger side to clear the transfer case for a 4X4.

If you want to wake up your 400, I suggest you do get headers and follow some of the suggestions in the 351m/400/cleveland forum.

Question Headers

Not sure of how previous owner installed engine. Looks like it would be a tight fit with the steering gear box, also on passenger side with transmission filler tube. I'm pulling the 400 and going through it. Plan to up the compression 9.0:1 - 9.5:1, mild cam 268 - 270 degree, dual plane intake with Edelbrock carb. This isn't gonig to be a hot rod, but do want respectable power.

Thanks,
Daniel

Daniel,

I know what your saying about the steering gear box, but if the engine is installed with the perches I mentioned, the engine will be shifted towards the passenger side maybe 2"-3". The perch for the drivers side is longer than the passenger side. This will help to clear the steering box. The only problem is lining up the engine and transmission so that it is in line with the rear housing. It is centered on the original rear ends of our trucks (I beleive?) So the engine will have to be ****-eyed a little. That's how I did mine and it worked out great. One more thing, the frame rails on our trucks are about 1-1/2" wider than the 70's 4X4 frames, so you need to box in the frame.

These are just suggestions if you wish to enhance or change what the previous owner did. If your pulling the engine anyway to be rebuilt, that's the time to make the changes!!!

If your engine is installed with an aftermarket cross member, I think most of them are tubular, and it may keep your engine centered between the frame rails. The best thing for you to do is measure to see if it is centered.

Thumbs up Headers

Jay,

Thanks for the info. and ideas, I'll check out the mounts when the engine gets pulled. I do hope headers will fit.

Thanks,
Daniel
