Brunswick, Georgia is a nice city with a small town feel that is close to a lot of cool places.
Letchworth State Park in Upstate New York is a GREAT place for all kinds of outdoor fun. It's also close to Niagara Falls for another excellent day trip.
We find our vacation spots by determining which area of the country we want to visit, and then look for small towns/cities nearby that have interesting things to do.

Yikes! Visiting Phoenix in August? Be prepared, the temperature will be in the 90's...at midnight! Hotter than he!! during the day. Coupla days ago, the daytime temp reached 115.

My sister lives in Scottsdale (Phoenix suburb), warned me about August...but...after we returned to CA

It's a little bit of a drive for you, but, Jackson (aka/ Jackson Hole), Wyoming is a FANTASTIC place to vacation!!
We were out there in July and the temps were in the 90s, but, the humidity was less than 10 percent!!

Just laying back, in the pool, and look at the mountains, and seeing snow on top of them!!

Keith, Wyoming is on our list for sure. We're hoping to take the kids on an extended vacation in the next couple of years and go out west. Haven't plotted the course completely but Wyoming is in there for sure.....as is Montana.
As an aside, I'm about 35 minutes from VA Tech so if you all need anything, just give us a ring.
A week in Texas shooting hogs in March.
A week in Idaho fishing the Snake in July.
And if things work out, a week in November at Shoup, Idaho fishing the Salmon for steelhead.

Vacation?............as long as I can do it all in Sat-Sun.
Usually, we would camp in our motorhome at a secluded spot in the Cascades, swat mosquitoes, and reel in fat trout from the boat.........and never see another human for days.

The Buffalo Bill Historical Center is located in Cody WY, is comprised of the Buffalo Bill Museum, Winchester Firearms Museum, Plains Indians Museum, Whitney Gallery of Western Art, a research center and etc.
Cody (founded by Buffalo Bill in 1905) is the eastern gateway to Yellowstone Nat'l Park. Cody's Irma Hotel has been in business since day one, has the original backbar donated by Queen Victoria.
There's another firearms museum located at Kings Saddlery in Sheridan WY.
Located near Buffalo WY are three battlesites associated with Lakota Sioux Chief Red Cloud's War: Fetterman Massacre Site, Wagon Box Fight, Hayfield Fight.
The in-famous Johnson County War was fought near Buffalo (cattlemen vs cow-boys). Cow-boy, originally hyphened, referred to a cattle rustler, not to cow punchers, which were called drovers or ranch hands.
