I have a 96 explorer 4x4.Two years ago I had the rack & pinion replaced. Now I have power steering fluid leaking out the rubber boots on the front end.The mechanic say`s the rack & pinion needs replacing again. Why would this only last two years.
It sounds to me like you got a poor quality rack last time.
Normally these don't leak but I've seen a few that did.
Get a name brand rebuilt rack....not just the cheapest one you can find.
Your right.I had it replaced this weekend. This one has a lifetime garauntee.I did call a ford dealer and the mechanic there said he has seen them need replacing in less than six month`s although not to often. Thanks
mind if i ask where you had it replaced and approx cost? My rack leaks from both sides (boots are filling with fluid) and the dealer and midas/tuffy are about the same price ~$760 incl. alignment.
also, where did you get a lifetime warranty? my dealer's is only a 12-month, 12k mile warranty.
