I'd like to hear some opinions on the right time to replace rad and heater hoses.
My '99 F150/5.4L is at just 70K but I've never changed either coolant (green) or hoses. According to the maintenance sched, the coolant change is mileage-based, which I've never seen before (isn't it is usually time-based?). According to that, I have a while to go, but I believe it is past due on my truck even tho the coolant in the tank looks clean.
Hoses all look ok (no swelling or cracks) and I see no suggested replacement sched from Ford. What do all of you use as a rule of thumb?
Finally, the heater hoses look like a real b***h to change, especially the one that disappears behind the engine, next to the firewall. Any tips??
It is past due, especially on the coolant should be every 2 years I try to do hoses every other time so 4 years or so. Heater hoses i never messed with because they are such a problem. You need a special disconnect tool to remove them at the firewall. Being the coolant is that old I'd definitely drain it and run some water with a cleaner for a few days through the engine.
