Last weekend we replaced the 302 in my dads 93 f150 with a rebuilt and slightly warmed over 351. Engine has a comp cams torque cam in it. Supposedly it's the largest cam you can run with speed density. It's a long story that i would rather not tell on why that cam was used. It was professionally rebuilt by the guy that builds the engines for our shop. So I have faith in the rebuild.
I used a reman ecu for a 93 with a 5.8 and e40d. I also used the correct flexplate for the application.
Symptoms, its lifeless. It idles ok but when you bring it off idle it has a dead miss all the way thru the rpm range. When it shifts into overdrive it vibrates so bad it will jar your teeth. It has a spark knock sound but it isnt spark knocking. If you pull off a plug wire one at a time it changes the way it runs so I don't think it's ignition related.
Could the ecu not be able to keep up with the cam, could it be a cracked head?
Any insight advice tips etc are greatly appreciated this is his work truck and his construction business is needin this truck on the road
Oil pressure is great on startup and then falls off from what he told me. I'm not sure how low it gets tho. I'll ask him and report back. I'm out of town until Sunday morning.
Did you change any engine bay wiring in the vehicle? You should not have.
Do you have the plugs wired for the 5.8 firing order(13726548) and not the old 5.0 firing order(15426378)?
Are you aware of the engine cylinder numbering sequence and distributor rotation? It's totally different than what Chev and Dodge use.
Yeah timing at 10deg BTDC with the spout out , with the valve train noise thats where i would start , if its a new flat tappet cam was it broke in to specs.....
No wiring was changed. The guy i got the 351 from had tig welded the egr port shut so those arent hooked up, but everything else is the same as it was from ford in 93.
Im familiar with fords and there firing orders. With that said, I had dad check it again and its correct. As is the timing/
He said the oil pressure went to high when turned on but after it runs it falls below 0. I know it has oil pressure tho, I had it running with the drivers side valve cover off and it was pumping nicely. He will put a mechanical gauge on it this afternoon.
He said that it doesnt vibrate its smooth for the most part.
He did say that it wont pull itself up a hill (its bristol tn so hills arent that big) in od. In fact its gutless in overdrive. Altho its gutless in all gears its even more so gutless in od.
The computer was a reman I got from oreillys. The distributor is also from oreillys.
The cam was broken in to comps specs.
I will have compression numbers sometime this evening.
If you have any ideas, comments, suggestions, anything at all please post up.
Compression numbers were as follows one cylinder had 145 one had 135 one had 110 and the rest had 125. It has about 50 miles on it now. I don't remember which cylinders had which numbers as I was driving when he called and I couldn't write it down.
Timing was checked again it's 10* with the spout unhooked.
One other symptom, it's not quick to start like it was with the 302. You have to crank it a bit before it will start.
I've thought about the chain as well. It's not a thought I want to have but it's definitely a possibility. I'm just hopin against all hopes that somebody has a tip on something easy I missed or didn't think of. I know that when I set it at top dead center that both rockers on number 1 were loose.
