99 f250 SD 7.3l
hi im curently looking for a newer truck than my 93 f150, i do towing of about 9000lbs, i was looking at a 97 f250 HD 7.5l for $6,300, then i found all the problems with it(oil pan, front diff leaking)
then i decided to look around and found a 99 f250 SD 7.3l with 124,000 for $15,000
now i know the 7.3l is a indestructible motor im told, is their things i should look for when i go to look at it?(common problems)
the only thing im debating on is going diesel or gas, but most likely the truck will sit from time to time till i need to tow 50-100miles.
but if i were to use it as a daily driver im told that diesels arent good for short trips, my work is about 4 miles away, friends house 10miles,
-i looked online and seen atleast 20miles or 20min of it running would be fine.
i kind of am leaning towords the diesel but if its not good for a dialy driver for short trips then i might look at around a 05 f150.
im just wondering on your guys opinions on the diesel since i will be new to them

Short trips aren't the best things for diesels. When I commute with mine I usually only do so when I'm going at least 20+ miles each direction (usually 30+ though), but for short hops I just drive my Accord. I love the way my truck drives and far, far prefer is to the 05 Honda econobox, but I try not to just do short hops in it, especially in the winter as these trucks have massive cooling systems and tend to take forever to get up to operating temp.
They are great trucks and will last forever if you take care of them. 15k seems a little steep on that one, see if you can talk them down a bit. I can easily get over 20mpg unloaded on the highway with cruise in 6th gear, and I just have an AIS and 4in turbo-back, an econo tune will be in the future and a lot of guys claim they improve their mileage with them. A 460ci V8 will absolutely suck fuel compared to a 7.3l, but it would be ok for a lot of short trips.

Not sure if what you are looking at is a 4wd and which model it is(lariat,xlt...). You will want a late '99 and up. That is not alot of miles for that year model. Depends on the shape it is in, etc. I have been amazed at what people are willing to pay for the 7.3 trucks these days. A clean one without a boatload of miles holds value well. I just recently hit 100k on my '99 and could have sold it a dozen times. Good luck with the decision.
