Lift kit rant
I bought my '95 F150 last July from a dealer. It already had a lift kit on it and 33" tires. The dealership made the truck look really nice by spraying undercoating on everything under the truck. Looks good, but makes identifying parts difficult. I have taken it to several 4X4 shops, and no one can positively identify the lift. I have heard "I'm pretty sure it's a ..." about 5 different brands. After looking them all up on the internet, the pictures that come closest are Tuff Country. I also suspect this is the case because of their description of camber and caster adjustment bolts on their axle drop brackets and radius arm brackets, which my kit has. I called Tuff Country. They said their dealer in my area is Les Schwab and I should take it there and they should be able to verify it. The response I got from Les Schwab was "I don't know what it is".
The problem is, I have a negative camber issue (surprise!). The alignment shop I took it to said it already has the biggest camber shims available. The camber adjustment bolts appear to be turned the way they would need to be to give the most positive camber adjustment. The guy said maybe my front springs are worn out and letting the front end sag too much. Truck looks level to me. I took it to another 4X4 shop today. The guy said it might be a Tuff Country, or maybe a Skyjacker.
He said the Tuff Country lifts are junk and said he noticed a crack starting in my front crossmember where the axle bracket bolts up.
He said I should just rip this one out and start over with a Rancho lift because the axle drop brackets Rancho provides spread the load out over a larger area, and tend to not crack the crossmember as much. Hmmm, they happened to be a Rancho dealer, I wonder about that. I've used Rancho shocks before and didn't like them, so I'm not too eager to do that. I guess my next step is sending pictures to Tuff Country to see if they can verify if my lift is one of theirs, and what my installed spring height should be.Anyway, are all lift kits this much of a PITA? I'm getting to the point of regretting trading in my Bronco.
The only prob with Rancho kit I have experienced is the add a leaf they supply. It wears out the factory spring pack and made replacement of entire pack necessary. Went with a 4" skyjacker in rear and have 50k on it with great results.
Sorry to hear about your disappointment.
I installed mine in late '94. I'd be happy to take pics to help you out. Let me know.
I did a search a while ago and it came up as a repo title, so contacting the previous owner might be difficult, if not just outright a bad idea.
The back springs seem to be fine. In addition to the add - a - leaf that I'm sure came with the kit, there are a set of overload leafs, as well as coil-over shocks. I am contemplating removing the coil-overs and just using normal shocks to soften up the ride a little.
Don't get me wrong, I love my truck. It is just extremely frustrating not being able to fix something as simple as the front end alignment.
