Since I seem to damage pan bolt holes every chance I get, since many years ago, I have opted for adding a pan drain. I do drain and fill transm fluid every time I do an oil change.
Drain **** + Magnefine inline filter -- this minimized opening the pan and helicoil the holes.
Henry I also added a drain plug---used the simple type from NAPA for $6.60 in any trans I know I'll be changing in the future. My 4R70W has that square downward facing projection which is the lowest point thus allowing nearly all fluid to be drained away first. While I've learned from these forums an easier way to initially drain a full pan any type of drain is very useful even before loosening the bolts.
I use a cordless impact driver to remove the bolts slowly but nothing larger than a 3/8" hand ratchet to reinstall. So far I've never had a stripped hole but thanks for the reminder---caution is important in this operation.
