Detergent properties

Are any of the common motor oils better at cleaning by way of detergents? Or would this be best accomplished with an additive? I have 120 K on my 302 and think it may help to run something through to free things up a bit.
Thanks,
Mike

While I am sure you are aware that motor oils have detergents in them, the extended oil change synthetics have more. That is basically how they work is via the additive/detergent package. You could add a quart of it to your existing oil for a gentle clean that would have to be repeated numerous times. There is also a product on the market called Auto-Rx that is ester based that does an excellent job and is not harmful to the engine. They are located at www.auto-rx.com I don't care for their marketing tactics but the product is good.

Detergent/dispersant additives are not there to "clean up" an engine but to hold contaminants harmless and prevent buildup. "Universal Fleet" type oils have much more of these. Do you have visible sludge in the PCV system or elsewhere that you can see? If not, don't worry. I disagree with the idea that synthetic oils or ATF, etc. will remove hard deposits that are already there.

I use a dual-rated SL and CI-4 diesel rated oil in my old 360. The CI-4 diesel rated oil is supposed to have more dispersants / surfacants in it to clean the engine, and prevent sludge. Something like that is probably just what you want. Dont bother with additives, they do more harm than good.
