4x4 newbie

Hi, I am new to 4x4. I got myself a used 98 F150 Lariat few weeks ago. What is the offroad package? What do I need to check underneath the truck to confirm if I got the offroad package or not? There's no 4x4 decal on back of my pickup bed. I plan to do some offroad riding, but nothing severe rough rocky terrians.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

BTW, I love my truck already!

Hmm, I checked underneath my 4x4 pickup. Assuming the skid plates is a "metal" plate covering some parts. I could see the plate covering the gas tank, and front end plate "hiding" the engine compartment toward the front end. So I would think this is the skid plate. However, I didn't see any plate covering the transfer case. Not sure about steering stablizer.... And no sticker decal on my pickup. Is this "offroad package" is just a marketing price addon bluff that has less meaning than it appears. If that's not the case, let me know what I'll need to protect any other vital parts while driving offroad on the mountainous terrains.

It would be a good idea if you don't have a transfer case skid plate to get one. If you are planning to do any wheeling through mountains it might also be a good idea to protect your drivetrain better. I think that the off-road package came with a t-case skid plate, because every truck we have has one from the factory.

I have a friend with a 98 F150 XLT? . Not sure what exactly comes with the package but he had some add-on's added at Ford Dealer. He had the dough at the time. But if it helps I know for a fact there is no skid plates covering the transfer case or the transmission. I think there is a metal plate on the gas tank though, like you said. Knowing this guy he would have bought the off-road package as well, I will ask him this weekend.

The off road kit comes with a skid plate on the t case. All the ford truck forward gas tanks have a metal plate on them. Basically the off road package is a sticker. Go buy a real skid plate that attaches to the frame. If you get a chepo and bold it to the t case or its flimsy coing down on a rock will shove the plate into the case and send the case into the cab. Trust me, I've done it.
