So the truck is a 79 f100, 351m, c-6 auto, 2wd, and i have had this problem before, but it "went away" for a while, but now its back. The speedometer works fine untill about 40-60mph, then the needle starts jumping around, sometimes it goes up to 75-85mph, when i know im going a lot slower. But the needle moves randomly and floats between 40-85, as doesnt do it all the time.... What do you guys think it could be? Anyone else have this problem?
I had a similar problem with my early bronco, turned out to be a worn out bushing on the speedo that was letting the metal tabs that rotate around the magnet lightly touch the magnet. You might want to make sure the cable isn't pulling down on the speedo to cause a misalignment and you may want to check the alignment of the spinning tabs and the magnet inside the speedo. To fix mine I slightly bent the tabs outward till they didn’t hit. This may have an effect on the accuracy of the speedo by a few mph but it didn't bounce around anymore.
