Have '86 F150 XLT, has a '89 Taurus 302 FI. Problem: when the weather is cold, the engine 'smokes' badly until I drive a mile or so. Then it stops. Do these engines have a cold-start valve? if so, could that be the problem? where would it be located? the smoke has a definite fuel odor and is white.
If it's the kinda smoke that dissipates quickly (within 10-15 feet of the exhaust pipe) then you're probably describing moisture. Typical/normal on a cold/cool day. Also the exhaust on a freshly started engine on a cool day will smell like fuel. The carb or fuel injection is set to run rich until the engine warms to proper operating temperature.
If there is a LOT of white smoke then you could have a head gasket leaking. Do you have coolant dissapearing?
If the smoke lingers (like you look back 3 blocks and you can still see the cloud) and is whitish/blue in color then it could be oil. Leaky valve guides would be the likely culprit especially if the smoke is most noticeable on start-up and then clears.
