Dana 60

I have a Dana 60 with 4.10 gears in my '76 F350. Can someone tell me how many splines in the axles, and if they're retained with c-clips. Also, has anyone installed an Eton Detroit Trutrac differential in their Dana 60--pros/cons, etc. I'm looking to upgrade to some sort of limited-slip/positraction set up.

Thanks

Over the years anyone couldv'e upgraded the axle. To check the splines pull the axle shaft out.. there's a few bolts on the end and it pulls right out.

I'm the original owner; the axles are factory original.

Would it not be a D70 if it were a true F350?

Axle code on the door jamb is 27J.
Re. D70--Is the diff cover different for a D70, cause I used a D60 gasket when I replaced the rearend lube. It's a "true" F350; as I said in an earlier post, I am the original owner.

The axle is retained by the bolts at the end of the axle, the ones that are visable when you look at the end of the axle. No retention clips involved. The axle floats in the housing, transmits power from the spider gears to the hub.

Thanks; now I'm wondering if I have a D60 or a D70. Next time I have my overalls on I'll crawl under the truck and look at the tag on the diff.

They use the same cover. D70's have a "70" cast into one of the supporting webs on the outside of the center section.

What he said. Also, the D70's case "overhangs" the cover's edge where the D60's cover sits flush with the case. i.e. the D70's case is larger but uses the same cover, so the cover's edge sits inside the edge of the case.

because I'm sure what I typed makes no sense what-so-ever.

If im not mistaking dana 70s uses studs for the axle shaft unlike th 60 uses bolts. Another easy way of telling them apart.

That may be true on some, but not all. My D70 has bolts.

one way to tell if its a 70 by visual is the axle tubes taper down at each end for the last few inches. This is also a common thing a dana 61 has as well so be carefull!
