What is the prt number for the HD version from Ford.
Called the dealor in torwn and he insisted I provide him my VIN, He then told me that only the regular 4R100 was correct for my truck.
I searched this site and several others but can't find the part number. I would like a BTS but it's a bit out of my comfort zone.
Motorcraft # TRM-1620
Ford # 6U2Z-7V000-FRM
I believe if purchased through Ford, they have a 3 year, 100k mile warranty.
The MSRP for this tranny is $3,500 (or $3,100 plus $1,000 core, plus shipping from PartsGuyEd), and I do not believe that includes installation labor (I could be wrong). So, you're STILL going to pay the same price as you would for a BTS, but get a much more inferior transmission from Ford.
Even if that price does include installation...for $700-1,000 more you can get a BTS. Don't take this the wrong way, but you will hardly notice the difference in your pocketbook. You can earn more money tomorrow. Work a few more extra hours, pack a sack lunch for a few weeks, don't go out to the restaurants every week, buy one less 6-pack of beer every week or so, etc. I'm not saying to buy the BTS on a credit card and pay it off later...I'm saying a month (or 2 or 3) of saving will get you the best you can buy, and be cheaper in the long run.
I can't tell you how many times over the years we have heard the tale of failing remanufactured Ford transmissions on this board...too scary to think about. First the original tranny fails and someone plunks down hard earned money to Ford and gets a tranny that fails again later. I would offer (though I fail to follow this advice 100% of the time, because I am a stupid old dog and have to relearn my tricks on an irregular basis) that: "Price is what you pay. Value is what you get."
On the east coast, I'd seriously compare installed cost of a BTS tranny to the reman Ford tranny. Out west, I'd do the same with a John Wood tranny. Then compare warranty, then compare customer service...the cost advantage may be with the remanufacturered Ford tranny, but the value is in the BTS or John Wood tranny. Why? It is the fact that both Brian and John have their reputations on the line with each transmission they build. Having met John, I can tell you that guy takes his reputation seriously. The proof that he does (and Brian too) is that I have never heard of anyone losing one of their trannies in six years of being on this board. Doesn't mean it hasn't happened, I just haven't heard of it. That's the whole value versus cost debate in a nutshell, I guess. To build a tranny that is better takes someone who will risk their reputation on it, one tranny at a time...that isn't happening on an assembly line.

Actually, I have heard of several people who have blown up a BTS. However, none of them have ever said that they paid anything for the rebuild. Put it this way. If there was a 2 yr warranty, mine would break in 2 yrs and 1 day. There was talk of someone doing snowplowing with their trans and that was rebuilt. On another forum, DOCKBOY has blown up several racing and has to pay for the case only when one of his piston rods, IIRC, broke it.
Best feature is I can do what I want with it and he will warranty it so I can tell the wife "Don't worry. The trans rebuild is free." when she frets that I will break it (since I have broken a few in my time) . Being able to say that is PRICELESS.
You forgot to mention the inconvenience and aggravation. Or are you over that now?
After thursday I will be over it for good.
Here is a quote from a BTS customer that I found on another site while I was googling one night. I kept for motivational purposes.
" I have had my BTS Trans for 8 years and 110K miles. My truck has been down the track over 100 times and I run the crap out of it every day. Two weeks ago I was having a little fun with a Porsche on a on ramp and when my trans shifted in to second I heard a loud boooom and my truck came to a stop. I had no forward or reverse gears.
I gave Brian a call thinking he would give me a good deal and he told me to send it to him and he would take care of it. I decided to take it up to Arkansas myself so my dad and I went for a road trip to BTS. Brian disassembled the trans and found the problem. The splines on the shaft going into the first gear / OD drum (If I remember) stripped out.
Brian completely disassembled, cleaned and rebuilt my trans with all of his new improvements including a new torque converter. My cost $0.00.
Brian also took my dad and I to lunch. Brian and his Wife Patti treated us like family. I knew Brian had a great reputation but I had no idea that he would take care of me after 8 years and 110K miles.
If you are looking for a trans it is well worth the shipping or the drive to have Brian hook you up."
I have yet to hear anyone say anything close to this about a Reman trans....
....buy one less 6-pack of beer every week or so.....
HEY! HEY! HEY! That's just crazy talk.
My wife asked me how long the BTS warranty is good. I said, "Forever". Put a price on THAT!
Any machine can fail, and I've read that Brian is actually eager to disassemble handgrenaded units to see what went wrong. Guys like him and John Wood are always looking for ways to improve their product instead of hiding behind several pages of legalese.

I don't know about JW since I have not dealt with him but I can't see why he and Brian do these things when the bigger companies don't. I would assume that they could do it cheaper and have more customers come back to them as opposed to hiding behind legalese and pissing others off.
