please help!

I need help diagnosing a problem. Car: 93 Explorer w/ approx. 170,000 miles. I bought it over a year ago, and a few months ago it began making noises. I would say the noise is a "clicking." Usually only happens after the car has been running for a while (1/2 hour or so.) The noise is more noticable going up hills. This started out not so bad but has gotten progressively worse recently. My regular mechanic says there is nothing wrong but I'm sure the noise must signify something. I don't really trust many mechanics in my area so if someone could give me an idea as to what the noise might be from I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Has it had a tuneup? That 'clicking' sounds like maybe spark knock as it pulls harder up a hill. Mine did the same thing, really bad for a while. New plugs cured it.

spark knock on the 4.0 OHV engine is commonly caused by a dirty Mass air sensor, or carbon in the cylinders, or a leaking lower intake manifold. The MAS can be cleaned, the lower intake can often be tightened, and the cylinders decarbonized. See if these help.
