Jetting Down A Holley

I know there are some Holley guru's in this forum, so maybe you guys can help me out?

Warning: This doesn't pertain to a Ford, but the majority of guys in my Cherokee forum don't have a clue about carbs.

I'm having some issues with my 2.8L (173 c.i.) powered XJ, the choke keeps closing at random times on me. I know I could rebuild the old carb, but I have an 4bbl Edelbrock Torker II intake setup I was saving to run a 390 cfm Holley. Money is a little tight though and I wondering if I could just jet down a 600 cfm Holley for the time being and run the new intake setup? How far down is too far that I'd have to be concerned with improper air/fuel mixture? Any recommendation for jet sizes or other tuning tips. I'm more an Edelbrock guy (too dumb to work on a Holley ) so could use any help offered. Thanks ahead of time guys.

Jetting doesn't have a whole lot to do with CFM. The thing is, as the vacuum signal increase, fuel gets pulled at a higher rate as well.

You'll most likely see a performance decrease as the vacuum signal from the teeny motor won't be enough to utilize the larger 4 barrel. You might be able to get away with locking the secondaries shut, but that will screw up fuel distribution.

I'd rebuild the old carb, or sell/trade the 600 for a good 390.

I would not recommend putting a 600 cfm Holley and messing with the jetting. You would be much better off by rebuiling the 390 cfm carb.

I would go talk with some guys at a local speed shop, see what they can offer (as far as help & advice).
