i just converted my front running lights into running/directionals, and my rear to running: brake/signal. i used a 7 wire switch and the brake and directional share the same filament in the back (with running lights on the other filament), that's why the brake wire goes from the brake switch through the directional switch, then two separate wires from directional switch to rear lights. the wiring diagram was clear about all this and its working fine. dick r.

Thanks. That is exactly what I want to do.

I made my own wiring harness, keeping my '53 as 6v positive ground. I disconnected wires at their destination, labeled them at the connection with masking tape, and basically removed the entire harness as one large piece of spaghetti still connected to the back of the speedo/dash and switches assembly. gently pulled the whole mess into the cab thru the big ol firewall grommet hole. It looked much more disconcerting laid out on the floor of the garage than it actually was to work with. Then I just replaced each wire one at a time length for length, end for end until everything was new. I soldered and shrink tubed everything, labeling the new to match the old as I went. I used twist ties to hold the whole mess together until after it was reinstalled into the truck, feeding it all back thru the firewall grommet hole. Then as time goes by, and things get arranged, don't get changed or redone, I'll zip strip what's completely finished replacing the twist ties. One rule of thumb for wire sizes, step up one gauge (ie: 12g to 10g) from what would be normal 12v wiring to use 6v. you have half the voltage, so you need twice the amperage, hense the next size heavier wire. Other than the battery and starter cables, the wiring for the generator and battery are 10gauge. I used a simple off the shelf 8 space fuse block from NAPA along with the original circuit breakers on the back of the speedo.

My turn signals are the simple 3 wire switch assembly in the top of the steering column. As I understand it, it was an option at the time, and I have to run separate turn signal wires and lights front and rear. No big deal, they just got twist-tied into the harness lol. Cheap booger that I am i used some motorcycle turn signals that were laying about, and reworked the big round knobber lights added onto the front fenders. Ive seen the switches, and canceling assembly listed on E-Bay from time to time. I still only have one brake/tail light in back on the left, but will get around to adding one to the right one of these fine days. BTW, your brake light switch is probably at the tail end of your brake master cylinder and pressure operated. The stop light wire in mine ran down to the switch, then the rest of the way back to the tail light assembly. If you do the fancy all in one brake/tail/turn set up you'll need to run your brake switch wire down to the MC then back up to the turn signal switch assy.

Assume nothing. The truck will run either way but it will run better if the coil is electrically correctly hooked up. That is why the little + and - is marked on the coil. It is an effeciency thing. Just follow the schematic when you rewire it.

Is there a way to determine before purchasing the turn signal switch which of the different types of switch it is?
My truck already had the turn signal switch in (Signal-Stat from the 50's). I wanted to keep it like my grandfather had it. So I mounted my turn signal lights just above the brake lights. I think you might want to consider this as it might provide better visibility and warning for tailgaters, especially for a bigger truck.
Here is a pic of mine:

Does anyone know if this chrome universal turn signal switch from LMC Truck is a 7-wire switch? It sure looks like a Signal Stat in the picture. Part number 48-4905. That looks like a good price at $25.

The chinese are good at copying successful designs... I would stick with genuine SignalStat. If it were genuine, it would say so.

'51 6cyl wiring specs

I used several resources to compile a list of the wires in my truck. They are listed by AWG and color, as well as to and from destinations. No turn signal wiring is shown, as I don't have them in my truck yet. And the wiring for the electric wiper motor and switch are not shown, as they are not in any of my reference materials other than a picture in the Shop Manual. Now I need to figure out how much wire to buy of each of the 25 colors/stripes. I think I'll stick to the basic Yellow, Red, Green, Black, Blue wire and if I can find it, add shrink tube at the ends to indicate the stripes in Black, Yellow, Red, Orange, Green, White and Blue.

Believe it or not, if you have it in Excel or Word, you can simply do a copy and paste into a post dialog box. It's easy enough for people to then copy it out of the post and into their own spreadsheet/Word table. Word works best if you have the info in a Table.

Thanks. I tried that after putting it into a Word table, but it comes out as seen above. Hopefully it's understandable. It's not formatted correctly...

That was from Excel, could be better. Do you have the lengths needed for each?

No, I won't know the correct lengths until I yank the original wires out of the truck.

And I don't want to do that until I have it idling correctly; it won't idle, runs rough at lower RPM and stalls. I just ordered a carb rebuild kit. The mixing screw makes no difference so I'm hoping that's all it needs.

Are these the same from 48-52? Also are the I6 and V8 the same?

Colors should be the same, but lengths will be different between the 6 and 8, and between 48-50 and 51-52. For instance the generator is further from the regulator on a 6, and the dashboard wiring will be different between 48-50 and 51-52.

Actually the '52 with a 6 (OHV) will be different than the '51 with a 6 (flathead), too.
