Alright so I'm a little stumped right now. I had put a flowmasters 40 series muffler on with everything else stock and it sounded pretty good but still was quiet. I decided to remove the tail pipe (which is clamped) to the muffler and put a 90degree elbow and vent it out the side. It's pretty close to the tire. The muffler is connected directly to the cat but now sounds even quieter than it did before. I thought removing pipe would make it louder what's happening here what should I do? Sorry if my post is a little confusing.
i get what your saying, you just swapped out the tailpipe. did you notice a difference in preformance when you swapped out the muffler? only reason i ask is kinda a dumb question, could the muffler itself be backwards? i know your probably thinking "no *******" but i had to ask. some mufflers are reversable and i didnt think flowmaster was one of them.
i put a 40 series on my old bronco and it was a bit louder but nothing crazy,as far as the tailpipe being shorter......maybe it eliminates some of the the distance the sound has to reverberate..making it quieter???? just a total guess
Actually I kinda wish it was on backwards lol but im thinking eliminating the tail pipe made it quieter. But someone else had tod me cut the cat off which I may do and get a temp flex pipe to make the full lenght tail pipe
actually i have an easier way, get a peice of rebar or allthread (about half inch diameter,2ish long), take off the muffler, put the rebar in the exhaust and start breaking up the honeycomb in the cat, start the engine and rev it up every so often to shoot the cracked up stuff out. once youve hollowed out about a 2+inch diameter hole all the way thru and have all the broken stuff out, put the muffler and tailpipe back on, i did this once before and it was a big improvement to sound and preformance. It still passed emmissions aswell
I did that but used like an 18 inch drill bit maybe smaller it didnt go throught all the way. Im massachusetts I dont need to pass emissions with my 95 everyone keeps telling me just to cut the cat off so im prob gonna do that see how it sounds then if I have to ill get a.piece of flex pipe to make the tail pipe longer again
The dual cat set-up on on motors really quiets them down, heck I ran with no muffler for a couple days and it was barely noticeable, I currently have a dual out flowmaster 40 and it's really noticeable. Long tubes on the way tho
im getting a cherry bomb turbo put on as we speak, there wasnt enough space for me to just cut out the old muffler, the guys working on it are setting it up so i can remove the muffler for a straight pipe when i go wheelin
My ideal dream exhaust IF I can fit it will be: full length headers with a cat on each small X/H pipe and then a Flowmaster Super 44 on each and connecting to exisitng dual pipes out teh back. I know its tight, but i'm hoping I can get all that tucked up safely. i have a great exhaust shop here locally.
Deadeye when I cut/mangled the stock exhaust off it was terrible. Barely any room to cut then trying to get the tailpipe out from under teh truck without use of a lift. It finally involved a BFA and lots of busted knuckles.
When I cut my stock muffler off I was in the same position couldnt get the pig out and finally cut the rest off while under the truck which we tried to avoid. my whole exhaust system is pretty ghetto did everything myself lol but I dont have the money to pay someone to do it
the stock manifolds and restrictive Y pipe with dual cats is whats making it quiet. Get some shorty headers on there, have a muffler shop make you a 2.5" mandrel bent Y pipe with a magnaflow hiflow cat and run 3" exhaust out stock location with your 40series flowmaster. Place the muffler back towards the rear end in the stock location also.
the setup i have is similar except i have a hooker aerochamber muffler. i like it because when i am just putting around the woods its not loud at all. but when i flogg the throttle it wakes up nice.
