Engine oil/coolant temp and over/under boost codes
I am having an issue with my 05 F350 that is quite frustrating. Have been to three different shops over the past 6 months and have dropped a good deal of cash on the truck in this time. Just when I think all is well, the problems keep coming. Here is a brief chronology in hope that someone can head me in the right direction.
Oct 2010 - Black smoke, rough running and hard start. After a few trips to dealer, replaced all injectors and EGR valve, flushed fuel system. Ran great after this. Was told the system was absolutely filthy.
June 2011 - Engine light (Wrench) came on. Truck seemed to go into limp mode and I had to shut down and restart the engine a numer of times to get home. Shop pulled a cam position sensor code from truck and replaced same. Had also noticed a smell of coolant in cab and noticed some leakage from cap on bottle. Cap was replaced. Codes cleared.
June 2011 - About 70km's post CPS and cap replaced, engine light came back on. This time, no noticeable drivability issues and codes that came up were Engine oil/coolant temperature and over/under boost codes. Had codes cleared and was instructed to keep an eye on things. At EXACTLY 70km's of normal hwy driving again the engine light appeared with the same codes.
Aside from the, from what I'm told, are normal turbo sounds when letting back on the pedal quickly (whop, whop, whop) and the odd whistle, I have had no driveability issues.
Anyone have any thoughts on possible culprit/s? I am hoping the codes are being generated from one issue but realize I may have a few to deal with. Any help would be appreciated!
Jim
But based on your descriptions, here is my best blind guess. When they did your injectors and EGR valve, they flashed your truck to the newest computer strategy. That is a good thing, and recommended. But it includes some new logic that watches for the differential between coolant temp and oil temp, for voltage hitting your injectors, and for too much turbo boost.
Now you are getting the wrench light because one of those new early warning parameters is out of the desirable range.
It is probably because your oil temperature is going too high, compared to your coolant temperature. I am guessing that is the problem, because it takes you 70km of driving for it to happen. It means you need a rebuilt oil cooler, and probably a new EGR cooler. If it were a voltage or boost problem, it would not be related to time and distance.
We need the actual code to verify my guess.
I think your dealer might have taken you for a ride on the CPS. That one is a rather rare failure on a 6.0. You might have needed the degas bottle cap, that's common.
The turbo wop wop wop is normal turbo fart. Some can hear it, some cannot. Either way, not a problem.
Sounds like your oil cooler may be plugged allowing your EGR cooler to overheat, which overheats the coolant and eventually leads to EGR cooler failure. It can also result in excessive oil temps. If the EGR has cracked, it will leak coolant into the exhaust and can gum up the exhaust side of the turbo leading to over/under boost because the vanes are not able to move freely.
I'd have the EOT/ECT temp spread checked by the dealer if you don't have the ability yourself (i.e., gauges) and go from there.
Well, I flushed the sytem with a reduction in the ECT and picked up a Bully Dog to monitor the other vitals. The ECT is running at about 200 and the EOT 227 for a spread of 27 obviously. I have ordered an EGR delete kit and a new oil cooler which should arrive tomorrow. Thanks for the info all!
