Decided to move a A/C unit this past weekend to put at our new house. I borrowed a 20' car hauler from a buddy that's rated at approximately 12,000 lbs and loaded her up with a John Deere skid steer 325 that tips the scales at about 8400lbs. I'm guesstimating a total of about 10,500 lbs behind the truck, not including the smaller unit that was in the bed and then the large unit that was on the trailer after switching them out. The truck averaged about 9-9.5 mpg towing this load at 55. Now for the actual towing report, I have towed this same trailer with my old truck, 2006 F250 6.0, the V10 towed the trailer MUCH better and seemed to have more power than the diesel. Needless to say, I was extremely impressed and it sounded good doing it!
I say that about my '08 V-10 all the time but no one believes me that I can out pull 6.0's. I always keep my Predator on the "middle" 91 octane setting but use 89 most of the time without any problems.
Wow! I am wicked envious of you guys. My v10 is a totally nutless turd. Towed
My waste trailer 4200 lbs spent most of the time with my foot to the floor 4800 rome going up small hills. Best I see emPty is 11'mpgs highway. Start towing 8-9, put some weight behind 5-6.

To samsdad02: You got something more wrong than what performance parts can help. When was the last time you changed the air filter, cleaned the MAF, changed plug and plug boots, changed the fuel filter?

Your truck has issues and it isn't because it is a V10. I'd guess you have 3.73 gears and need a tune up.
Agreed! I get about 12.5 unloaded, but I didn't buy it for the mileage, I bought it to cancel out at least two Prius's! Now towing our toy hauler, I get about 6.5 average, but it's 40' and close to 13,800 unloaded.
I know it has issues. been hunting them down for over a year. changed plugs, coils, fuel filter, pcv and elbow, 2 new m.c. o2, 4 new calipers and brackets, 5 starred, ebay headers, ypipe, fuel injectors, fpr, cleaned maf, etc etc all done within the past year. I'm up from my 5-7 around town to 11mpg .
I do have 3.73s which I know hinder me. new tires are 265/75/16 which are a little shorter than originals 235/85/16.
I'm still envious of people who can tow easily and get appropriate fuel "economy".
I have 373 gears and NO issues towing 7500lbs TT. Sure I could get better mpg or run a little cooler on big hills, but honestly 373 gears+ Torqu Shift trans+ Mike's tune = winning.

Totally agree!!! My TH is about the same weight, it has a 10.5K rating. I have 4.30 gears and 315 tires and have NO issue getting the load moving or keeping it moving. I can tow the Cajon Pass (8% grade for 3.5 miles) at 60mph, and still have room to accelerate. This is bone stock, I haven't had a chance to test out my 5Star tow tune yet. And I got 8.8mpg doing it. Not fabulous, but the trade off is that I don't have to worry about having enough power to pull the load.
