PCM issue

I can't see why you must use a pcm with the same # on it. Would not a 2003 pcm placed in a 1999 truck bring up the hp to 250 and have all the improvements from ford in it. Since everything else in/on the engine is the same, aren't the newer pcms just updated for performance improvements????

In 1999 Ford started using multiple DPC-families for almost every year. Depending on if it is Federal or California coded you will need a specific PCM code to match it. Example-If you run a Fed coded PCM in your Cali coded truck your glow plugs won't work right when the temps drop. You may be able to start the truck with an unfamiliar PCM code but it won't run correctly. For example I really like knowing how fast I am going and despise seeing the water in fuel light come on when you put the wrong DPC family pcm in and try to use it.

The only pcm you can gain anything from is a well tuned one.

Still can't get my head around this. All sensors feeding the pcm are the same in all the 7.3 trucks for all years 1999-1/2 to 2003. Virtually every engine/trans. management sensor is identical. So, if all are the same, then different pcms shouldn't matter except for different engine/trans. strategy changes??? Depending on Ford learning as time goes by and changing pcm strategies to compensate for problems encountered in trucks as time goes by. If different pcms do weird things, what is causing the changes???????
