I have less than 2000 miles on my truck and early on I checked the engine idle time. It was nearly 25% of overall time. I don't idle the truck much if at all so I'm confused by this. I didn't check the numbers when I picked up the truck so I don't know if there was a high number there from day one.
So...what do y'all have for engine idle time as a percentage of overall time?
Is there a number that is considered to be too much or potentially a problem?
My idle time was much higher than I would have guessed as well. I only have about 1,100 miles on it. I would say it's about 10% of the overall hours if I recall. I'm not sure I've even been in the truck as many hours as it says it has!
I make a note of it when I change oil which I've done twice now....
4,700 miles, 126 total hrs, 14 idle hrs, 11.1% idle time
10,100 miles, 264 total hrs, 26 idle hrs, 9.8% idle time
Same as you, I don't really idle it. And I don't get in stop and go traffic much and neither sit at lights much. So I don't know how it comes up with that much idle hours.
I also recall it had a fair few idle hours when I got it but I can't remember how many. I do remember wondering how it could be that high with almost no miles on the truck. I'll bet when I was at 2,000 miles, my idle % would have been higher because of that.
I will add that I rarely if ever just idle my truck. Last winter I do remember idling for about 2 hours over the course of a few days. Most of my driving is city driving so most of my idle time is at stoplights.
A few months ago there was a roll call on hours, most of us were at around 20% idle/run time.
When I first got my truck it was killing me with idle time as I tried to figure out all the nav and sync stuff, load CD's into the jukebox, figure out all the "stuff". It actually created stress in my life, all the time I was idle in the driveway with a new motor was killing me but I could not do all that stuff while driving. They need to start installing "shore power" sockets on these things, lol.
Honestly, I never have understood why the block heater power is not integrated with the rest of the truck to trickle charge the batts and what not.
When I pickup up my truck it had 18 miles on it and 15 hours of idle time. I forgot to ask the dealer about this. How could a new truck have 15 hours of idle time on it.
