Hi, I has a 1993 ford f150 with the 300 straight six in it. I want to put an exhaust on it but I'm having trouble figuring out what to put on it. I want something that will be load and kinda have that deep "throaty" sound. Since it's a six cylinder idk what to buy. What do you guys think?
Inline 6 doesnt sound throaty by design. My inline 6 sounds like a farmall tractor!
Yeah so does my 87 inline six. V8s got a better sound by design. I'm pretty much just trying to get my exhaust back to stock to get it to be quiet. right now its just too annoying and deafening. it would be one thing if it sounded good loud but it doesnt, which sucks...
You may want to do a search here on FTE. This has been covered numerous times. 6cylinderbill has many posts concerning exhuast on a 300.
I have a '92 300 as well. I just removed the rear cat, put a high flow mufflow in, and 2.5' exhaust, dumping it out in front of the rear passenger side tire.
Flowmaster 50-series Truck & SUV. Like the wise men above said, you don't want to hear this thing uncorked. It's no 302 when it comes to beautiful exhaust tones. I also recommend a turn-down to deflect the rest of the sound into the pavement. With the 50-series, which is a 3-chamber muffler, you'll get the TQ and efficiency improvements from a lower backpressure but it won't make a scene.
I called Flowmaster and I've been very satisfied with the one they recommended- it's the same noise as stock but I gained roughly 0.5 MPG, which has saved me an estimated 140 gallons of fuel over the 130,000 since I put it on. That isn't life and death, but it's a good investment in a motor that will probably live longer than our trucks.
A straight 6 will never sound like a v-8! But, that is not a bad thing if you are a hunter as I am. I have frequently surprized wildlife in the woods that acted as if my truck "was further away than they thought"! I am not a "roadhunter", but a quiet vehicle does give Pop & I an edge when we arrive at our chosen "stepping off point"!
I wouldnt do anything more than maybe taking a cat off and putting a glass pack on... Lets face it, the inline 6 is never going to sound like the "big and bad" V8. It's not a bad sound, it's just not a sound that most of us are used to coming from a truck. Plus, I've never been a fan of straight pipes.... They're just too loud for my taste.
I mean if you've ever been to a tractor pull and heard old farmall and international tractors pull........ Thats exactly how your truck will sound. Not bad at all, just not the deep throaty sound you're looking for.
No I sure don't, but I can get some pics. By the time I can get audio, you may already have your exhaust in and wheelin' around town. I will try to get something up. I mentioned earlier that 6CylBill had some knowledge on this, and you may want to PM him if you haven't already. The only undesirable thing about my setup is that if you do a lot of muddin', then you may sling quite a bit of trash on the exhaust, but I have never had that happen. My muffler guy was concerned with mud and Ice,snow that would acculmulate, but I never saw a problem.
Note: I misspelled 6CylBills' screenname earlier in this topic, my apologies to him.
Edit: You may also try Google or YouTube for some soundclips of some 300's, Straight-six exhaust. I know I have come across a few on YouTube.
