need to know some things, im doing my own oil change on my truck so i need to know how many quarts of oil to get. im plannign on getting a WIX filter since there have been so many bad thigns said about how cheap frams are built. how much would a thermostat cost for my truck? i might like to get a higher rated thermostat since my gauge never goes up to the middle (its half way between the middle of normal and cold if its been running quite awhile).
im thinking valvoline 10w-30 but if u have any suggestions tell me soon please. btw my truck has roughly 174,400 miles and counting so that might take some concideration AND it leaks a tiny bit of oil.
6 quarts is what you need. I like the Purolater filters myself. I read that the cheapo Pep Boys "ProLine" filters are just rebadged Purolaters...
Stock thermostats are about $5-10, a gasket is about $1. They are a PITA to change. I highly recommend a ratcheting wrench. Stock gauges lie, plain and simple. Mine stays over in that general direction too. Have you ever popped the hood after a long drive? Feel the radiator hoses... if they are hot, your thermostat is working.
I started using a can of Restore at each oil change, and seems to work nicely. My rear main used to leak hard-core until I started adding Restore and went to a thicker oil (I can run that since it is good and hot here in Texas).
If it leaks a bit, check your valve cover gaskets. Those almost always leak over time. If it isn't that, your front or rear main leak.
I use Motorcraft 10W-30 and a motorcraft filter, all bought at Walmart for $11.52.
Word of advice on thermostats, use FORD thermostats, do NOT use cheapy life-time warranty thermostats from autozone. I put one in in 1999, and after about 25k the thermostat opens and closes constantly. I can watch my guage move around on its own.
hi all. well i bought castrol gtx moteroil 10w-30, i'll add the last 1/2 quart tommorow morning. i really like the wix filter, it bumped my pressure gauge up to normal oh and im a rookie and made a mess all over the garage floor lol. anyways thanks for ya'lls help!
Don't just add the last half quart. Check the oil level first, and only add it if you need to. My engines have always only needed 5 1/2 qts. Then again, maybe the dipstick on every Ford engine I've had has been off by exactly 1/2 qt.
