I been thinking of a Exhaust Brake lately. I do tow a bit and if you have ever been down that White Bird Grade in Idaho.........it will scare the dickens out of you.........I've went to driving another route when I tow just to go around it.............so I thought about an exhaust brake...........I've seen those $100.00 specials that just hook up electronically that are sold on ebay and 2 more that are mechanical and sold on ebay........they go for about $900 or more and then I see there is a mod done on this site that is real inexpensive...........so can ALL of you folks chime in on the pros and cons of these and express ALL your thoughts on Exhaust brakes.........especially want to hear from those of you that have them and your experiences.
my truck is a 96 5 speed mostly stock and the most I tow is about 10,000 lbs. I'm an old geiser and can see myself having this truck til I die.
I did the DIY exhaust brake and I love it. Its not the perfection but it works fine. Surely the exhaust brake with some brand, must work better, but the price is very different. I use it when tow my TT about 7000 lbs.
It must work better with you standar tranny. I have an auto so I have to add the TC lock switch and also works fine.
I just read that indepth post........the way I read it all is that the $12.00 exhaust brake mod is just as good as the $1200.00 commercial brake that you buy except for one big thing..........the possibility of high engine revs and floating your valves......
so am I reading the extended posts right..........????
the way I see it that you can do the $12.00 mod and buy a guage to monitor the exhaust pressure and be ok............am I right here
I just want to get 10,000 lbs. down that damn whitebird grade without dirtying my pants. that is one long steep grade, the Grapevine in California has nothing on Whitebird......about as bad as coming off the back side of Sonora to 395 but much longer.

yes sir, you read right. And about the possibility of high engine revs and floating the valves, I havent read anything about it and I know a lot of members here and in other forums uses the cheap mod without troubles. I have a gauge for monitor the exhaust back pressure and when in use it marks 24 psi at maximum and IIRC the troubles begins when the exhaust back pressure goes more than 40-45. Surely some one else chime in here soon.
is the cheap mod just a switch you put on the EBPV? i just ordered a dp chip and they offer a tune that when you put on the brakes the ebpv will close. just wondering if thats what you guys are talking about.

Yes sir, you have to follow some diagram only with a switch and/or with the brake pedal, you choose one.
I know that DP has that set up, and maybe works in the same way, I really dont know and could be possible that its different if its standar or auto. IDK.
I use the mod on both the trucks in sig. I recommend it as auxiliary stopping. I do not have the pressure gauge and should I'm sure. I keep the RPM around 2000 and she is very effective. I use the 3 position switch, 2 different color lights and mounted it on a bracket.
I have the DIY, theres pics of my routing in one of my albums. It's effective, I don't have a gauge, but, I've read as long as you keep it below 2k rpms usally the BP doesn't reach the high mark which is... 40lbs IIRC .

From DP Tunner: Decel tune- this is used instead of an expensive exhaust brake. It performs the same function by using the EBPV to slow the trucks down. Some transmission strategies are used for auto transmissions also.
With a "decel tune" would you have to use it as one of your selections? Would using a decel tune be instead of a performance setting? Would this necessitate the re-flashing of a OBS PCM? Did I ask any or too many stupid questions?

Thanks, I will look later since I'm in a hurry right now. It's just that it broke my heart to splice into the harness of the '96 I bought new with 53 ( now at 199,K) miles on it. I've never quite forgiven myself, even though It's been worth more than it's weight in gold.
OK, so you can do the $12.00 or buy the $900-1200 commercial product.
Does anyone sell a kit that is similiar to the $12.00 that is inexpensive, one that is plug and play.......The DP folks seem real good.......but it will cost about $250-350 just for the brake.......and then if you get carried away.........it can go up real fast.........
So does anyone have any info and costs on a plug and play inexpensive EBV brake?

Money is tight
At the cost of $12+, the answer is NO. Its very easy to DIY.
Mike,
I understand money being tight... in the same boat right now. I do however, have experience with the DP DECEL Tune. It is effective, I was towing a 13k 5er down 395 (Bridgeport to Adelanto) and was able to use the brake on most all hills. It would not slow the vehicle speed (~60) but wpould help maintain the speed w/o much brake use at all. I was already planning on the DP upgrade any ways so the extra $45 was well worth trying it out. If you could save up the $$ their tow tunes work extremely well! Good luck.
