86 Electrical Problem
And is there a common problem 86-92 with any type of short out of wires anywhere, or any other type of problems which maybe occur?!
Actually, I had a nice response typed up regarding wire based fusible links from memory, then made the mistake of going to an online parts reference to see what type was used for a 1986 model. (Mine is a 1991) This picture was the indicated part and I fell for it, thinking your model must somehow be different than the others. My apologies if I have misled you.
The real fusible link is still a wire based affair, a smaller diameter wire placed inline between the starter relay/alternator circuit to protect the alternator and wiring harness from heavy reverse current flow due to shorts or jump starting with the polarity reversed. The link looks like a part of the wiring harness but is of larger diameter due to the insulation surrounding it. Look in the area around the starter relay in the engine compartment, likely a heavier red wire. If you see one that has cooked looking insulation, or has a melted appearance, that is likely your problem. This section can be replaced with standard repair kits, available from parts stores.
It is also possible the "new" alternator could be faulty if it is a rebuilt unit - it has been known to happen. There is no other fuse on the alternator side that I am aware of.
Regards
