Just replaced fuel pump on my 75 150 w/460 truck ran great for a mile or so then sputtered and died. I pulled the fuel line to carb and no fuel getting there. Could there be trash in the tank causing a blockage? Like I said it ran great for a mile or so. So what gives???
Did you check your fuel filter? Otherwise maybe check to see if there are any leaks along your fuel line from the tank to the carb. Just a couple thoughts.
Check the rubber fuel lines at the tank for deterioration.
Spot on - there are up to two short lengths of rubber fuel hose along the length of the fuel line back to the tank; if they deteriorate, they will draw in air and you will lose siphon.
Just pulled tank...that sux...3/8" lines are rotted as well as filler tube and vent...sock on inlet is black and clogged. No visible rust but fuel looks like lake water. Drained it into a 5 gal bucket through pantyhose and there is a lot of black debris. I will replace all the rubber and get a new sending unit, never flushed a tank any suggestions?
With that much garbage in it, I would probably have a radiator shop flush it for you - it wouldn't hurt to call around; I can't imagine it would cost much.
New pump, lines, sending unit and tank flushed. Runs great for a mile or so and dies. NO FUEL DELIVERY TO CARB. The last thing I can think of is pump cam. But wouldn't that be all the time and not after a short run? I have pulled line at carb and NO FUEL! Anyone, any ideas???
Pull the gas cap off and see what happens. If vents are clogged it creates a vacuum on tank not allowing it to draw fuel. Would explain why it run long enough for vacuum to build up.
Is there alot of under hood heat, meaning an excessive amount? Are you running headers? Might be a vapor lock caused by to much eng compartment heat.
I am currently battling that issue on my EB. And yes make sure you have a vented fuel filler cap.
Maybe install an elec pump back by the tank? Did you test the mechanical fuel pump (turn it over with the line going to the carb disconnected) and get a pretty good flow outa it?
After your mile or so test drive what did you do to get it to start, if you did? Wait 10 min and it started, prime the carb directly, or just tow if back home and get on here?
Towed it home and there is no flow at all after disconnected line to carb. Plan on pulling pump to see if I can pull fuel by hand. If so then it has to be eccentric cam, right?
