looking at buying a 94 EB with 185k tomorrow. It has some rust and is shifting hard from first into second. Should i avoid this one or take a chance that its not a big problem and could be fixed with a filter and fluid change? Owner said it does it occasionally and that it drives well. Good interior and solid 5.8L. Thanks everyone for you help!
I bought my 94 from the original owner who said it was recalled the first year for a transmission upgrade. I'm at 192K and shifting like new after a repaired PCM. Try to find out if the upgrade was done. Could be a later 94 already had the upgrade. I recently priced a Ford E4OD rebuilt through a tech who got a discount from the dealer...$2,250. The transmission is great if it had the upgrade. I don't know how to tell by looking at it.
As others have said all the engine sensors and engine tune up affect the transmission.
I would go with a filter change and drain the torque converter also as it has a drain plug.
