So i wanted to drive the beast today. I got some gas and then hooked up the jumper cables then got in the cab inserted key turned it to on the gen light came on. all good so far.
Turned the key to start. "clunk"
now there's nothing. not even a light in the dash.
what happened? does anyone have advice for this novice?
Determine that you have fully charged battery. Determine that you have serviceable cables from battery to starter relay and ground, and from relay to starter and that they are correctly wired. Then, what Huckdeuceman said.
Check the ground strap from the block to the fire wall. I would also check all connections on the starter Solenoid, and the Solenoid itself. My Solenoid failed about a year ago, and it was as if the Battery was dead.. nothing at all worked! New Solenoid, and everything was fine!

So I went thru all the cables made sure every thing is clean and tight.
Went to Napa and picked up a new solenoid. all the other electrical seems to work like dash lights headlights tach lights up.
still nothing when i turn the key to start.
can i hot wire at the solenoid? how? i vaguely remember a trick using a screwdriver to connect posts i don't remember witch ones.
If you are still dead, it sounds like your switch is bad... better to replace it, yes it is easy to jump the solenoid contacts, let me check my notes and get back to you as to which ones to jump! I think it is the two on the front if I recall.... one is the hot lead to the Coil... which should be hot as long as the key is on.... the other is the switch lead, which is only hot when the switch is in the start position. .. touch one to the other will get the starter to crank if all is good down line. if nothing happens, you might have a bad starter!
Yea, it sounds like the ignition switch is bad or incorrectly wired.
As far as "jumping" goes, you can either bypass the starter relay or bypass the ignition switch. To bypass the relay, momentarily jump (connect) large copper terminals on each end with heavy (4, or less guage) wire or two ends of a metal pliers if that's all you have handy. If everything's correct, that will turn over the motor, but it will only start if the switch is turned on. And that method does not activate the starter relay.
To bypass the ignition switch, take any size wire and simultaneously contact the large battery side terminal of the relay (or the positive post of the battery itself), and the left-most small threaded post on the front of the relay. OR, take a screwdriver and contact the same two posts, if you can line them up. That will activate the relay and turn over the motor, but not start it unless the key is on.
And don't do any of this with a metal ring on your finger.
Haven't read all the ideas, but has anyone checked for 12 volts @ battery you gotta start there b\4 buying stuff
power is coming from a running honda parked right next to.
a little back story. last summer when driving around it started dying. it was running out of gas w/ a full tank. last fall I pulled the tank (and the seat and floor matt) cleaned tank out and lines. found a blockage in the line that goes from the tank to under the cab.
Two weeks ago I got it all put back together. new fuel filter. the fuel pump was replaced in 09.
The starter works if I apply power strait to it. So it seems like the current problem it at the ignition.
here's a couple pics of the clean up. This truck was in a flood so there is silt EVERYWHERE. I've cleaned out gallons of it.
fresh paint on the in cab batt. cover and battery tray.
