Hello, I'm planning on taking a couple trips in the next two weeks and I have an issue with my 2005 Escape.
I'm hearing a hissing noise coming from the driver-side area of the dash. Possibly coming out of the AC vents.
The noise occurs when I accelerate and as long as I keep my foot on the gas pedal, but it promptly goes away once I tap the break pedal. It started off relatively quiet but has gotten louder the past day or so.
I don't know much about what goes on under the hood, but I am thinking maybe it's a coolant issue. But would it be affected by when I apply the gas, then go away when I apply the break? I just don't want it to be a power steering issue, or a break problem.
I'm planning on taking it to a mechanic, but I would love to have a little background knowledge before I go, just so I won't be taken advantage of.
Thanks so much for your help in advance! If you need more specific details just ask--I'll provide what I can for you.
Possible that the brake booster is leaking or sticking. When you tap on the pedal, you are exercising the vacuum valve that allows vacuum on one side of the diaphragm to help you press the brake pedal. If the valve were leaking, it would hiss, and perhaps re-seat when you tap on the brake pedal, more or less preparatory to stopping.
I'd see if the sound was from near where the brake master cylinder rod goes through the firewall.
