I have a Cleveland engine I need to test start...not hooked up to anything, how would I go about doing so? Just primarily to here it run for a few seconds. It has a 2bbl carb...
me and my dad did the same thing with a 400, had it running sitting in the bed of the truck, we had the bellhousing bolted to a 2x6 to sit it upright with a 4x4 under the front of the oil pan, hooked the ground wires to the negative battery terminal, sorry but cant remember what we had hooked to the positive terminal, but here is a vid of it running... ‪1971 Ford 400 running‬‏ - YouTube
What did you bolt the starter to? Or did you spin the motor over by some other means?
Also .... just a question .... Isn't that kinda hard on the valves? I would think you take quite a risk of warping an exhaust valve without any manifolds.....
They used a manual trans bellhousing without the trans attached, as long as you have the flywheel on. The starter bolts up no need for the rest of the trans for what you are doing, the 4 holes the trans was bolted to is what they used to attach the 2x6
if your looking for info on what wires are needed, you should give us a little bit more info on the type of dist. you have points or elect. Still with the trans attached make sure this thing is strapped down.
Then it prabably has points (one wire on the dist, if it has 3 you have electronic ign). You need to wire up a starter sel., wire from batery pos. to sel and sel. to starter. Ground on bat to engine. You should still have 1 wire on the dist. that goes to the neg. side of coil. On the pos. side of coil wire a wire back to the bat. pos. through a toggle switch. Then you will need a wire on the bat. pos. that will just hang out there, and with the toggle switch turning on the switch and touching the s terminal of the starter sel. with the loose wire will simulate you turning the key. Turnning off the toggle will kill the engine. Remember you said a couple of seconds so you won't have to worry about coolant, and the coil will overheat if driven with 12 volts for a long period of time. Dont forget about gas to the pump (for safty sake don't use a full gas can), and strapping it down.
yeah kingford you are actually right, and i think we did have the positive cable hooked to the coil, and weve done this many times before without manifolds so it dont really hurt anything, except the heat melted the stickers on the battery next to the engine haha
