Rear Brake problem
I usually stay over on the 6.0 diesel site(almost always need help with the 6.0). Anyway I have a 1989 Ranger, 4x4, 2.9 EFI, auto, xcab that I am trying to put back on the road after sitting for about 3 years. Engine and trans service going well, but i've got brake issues. Drove it a few miles and the brakes locked. Let them cool 20 minutes and you could go again until you stopped a couple times and they'd lock. Pulled front calipers, cleaned and greased including slide pins. They were rusted, gunked up so I thought I had it solved. On test drive they seemed to work okay but no rear brakes at all. Pulled the rear wheels, shoes and wheel cylinders. It all looked about as bad as the front, neither wheel cylinder would budge. Went to NAPA got new shoes and wheel cylinders and started changing out. All this history to get to here. Wheel cylinders looked dry, pumped brake peddle and nothing out of either brake line. By the way the peddle feels good and fluid is topped off. No issues visual with the brake lines to the master cylinder. Thoughts?? Any opinions or help appreciated.

My guess is that you have fluid under pressure going into the RABS unit but not coming out on the outlet side. If that is the case, the best cure is to replace that component. O'Reilly's carries the part (remanufactured with a lifetime warranty) for about $130 plus a $50 core charge. They call the part an ABS hydralic valve. Other parts supplier may also carry a replacement unit. Ford's new unit is about $330, if you can find one.
I've just gone thru having my RABS valve replaced. The O'Reilly part was installed.
Hope this helps you.
If the master is bad, being it is a separate system front and rear, you could have the front working the calipers, but the rear dysfunctional. Not too expensive, just a pain to replace.
