460 Valley Pan

For a stock intake manifold off a '79, is a valley pan required? There have been mixed responses on the internet, and most people are saying that you don't need it. People are saying that it keeps the hot oil from splashing up onto the intake manifold, which in turn keeps the air/fuel combination cool, increasing the horsepower. HP isn't a major concern for me, so I want to just go without one.

Thoughts?

I went without the valley pan. I don't believe the oil splashing on it makes it any hotter, especially with the exhaust crossover unblocked. I'm using an edlebrock performer aluminum intake with the exhaust crossover blocked off.

With my weiand intake it said not to use one. Factory intakes use one to keep oil from splashing up onto the intake with the exhaust crossover and gumming up or turning to sludge.

Yeah thats what I was reading. I am using just a stock intake, crossover and heat riser, so I figured it would be best to have one

I just trimmed the intake port areas off, used felpro gaskets, and hightemp silicone on the front and rear instead of the rubber pieces.

I Use One...

With the Edelbrock intake. Followed the instructions that came with the valley pan, used the rubber seals AND put RTV in the corners....no problems.
