electrical problem /need advice

Hello all, need the experts advice before i start replacing parts i dont need too.
93 F150 4x4,302. symptom started showing itself a day ago, turn the key to start engine, slight 1 second surge(like it wants to turn over) then nothing....BUT, turn the key to on position, move gear selector thru its range (automatic) and either go back to PARK or Nuetral and it starts right up.....At present time thisproblem has only acted up 4 times in the past two days at which time i started the truck a dozen times or so,which leads me to believe what ever part is going bad is just starting too.....Do i have to have the electrical system checked out, battery is less then 3 years old,,doesnt soundl like a starter.....any ideas appreciated!! thankyou

sounds like a failing or loose neutral switch on the tranny, could even be a bad wire on it.

Definitely the neutral start switch on the transmission, or its circuit.

It sounds like the NSS. If you have the E4OD the replacement is $28.50 my cost from Napa. Yours may be a little more. Its a straight forward install. You have to change the harnes plug but the directions are easy to understand. FYI the one from Ford is $97.

thanks guys for all the advice..it appears i have the E40d tranny, although the pics in the manual for the AOD tranny show the Nuetral switch your talkin about, fairly straight forward etc, the pics for the E4OD tranny do not show that item. I assume on that model tranny its called the Manual Lever Position sensor which is the only thing i can see which has a wiring harness attached to it. Also has the shift linkage as part of it mechanics..am i right? If so is this controlling the same function as the NSS you mentioned on the AOD tranny? Appears a little more complicated to replace then the stand alone NSS switch... any commments id appreciate!! thanks again.

If i understand the complaint(maybe i dont) the delay? in starting sounds like the common starter relay problem.

I have slighty the same problem in my '93 I6. Its standard and I got no power to my solenoid when turned to crank mode. If I arc the solenoid I can get her started. Looked in my haynes manual and I got an idea that the neutral safety switch is ratched, but where is it on a 1993? I looked under the dash around the clutch pedal and its point where the push-rod goes in but I dont see nothing. Im lost. I have a new cylinder lock ignition part installed and I dont see nothing anywhere to indicate the safety switch is there??!! SOmeone help!
