last winter i fried my tranny plowing a huge storm we got. i took my truck to my machanic and got a new rebuilt jasper transmission. now the issue i am having is when i go from drive to reverse the slams real hard into reverse, but it only does this when it is hot. so i took it back to him and he said i have ply in my transercase and drive shaft. so when he told me that i was like ok whatever bet then i got thinking. if there is play in the transfercase and drive shaft wouldn't it still slam when it was cold as well. why would it being hot have anything to do with it. I just want to see if i can get the transmission to go into reverse a little eaiser. it feels like i am going to aventually brake something with how it is slamming in. Please any ideas . . . thanks
Am currently having same issue, just solved my problem with my E4OD wanting to go into neutral from reverse or from reverse to 2nd gear instead of drive. Is your gear box leaking? also, how many miles are on it? and it is only from park to reverse? if so mine is SAME thing right now since i fixed other issue.
i am not having any trouble going into any gears or it going into wrong gears or popping out of any gears. the problem is just when ever i put it into reverse from any other position, drive, park, neutral, just when i put it into reverse the transmission just seems to slam into reverse and it seems like i is beating the hell out of my drive train. i just wanted to know if there is anything i can adjust on the tranny to make it enguage into reverse eaiser
Yeah i thought it was u joints but my shaft doesnt move when i shake it myself or shift. Its very tight. But i think t might have to do with the gear box. Im replacing gasket and fluid soon. Any ideas on what to look for in the gear box? I have never opened one up and taken a look.
Did you take the tension out of the driveline? If the truck is sitting in a driveway in park, the driveline is loaded and you won't be able to move it regardless of how sloppy the u-joints are.
yea i dont really think my issue is any play in anything because if i come to a stop and gas it there is no play. Do you guys have this problem only when it is at running temp or all the time. mine only happens when the truck is at running temp. whe the truck is cold i put it into reverse from any gear it feels like i just got it off the show room floor. i know winter is a ways away but i want to get this resolved because plowing is just drive-reverse all day long

I don't know about opening one up, never done a Ford T-case. But, I had removed my rear drive shaft at the carrier bearing and tried to turn it in the T-case but there was no movement there. Next, i shifted the trans into neutral and used a pry bar to spin the input into the t-case and watched the output for slack. Nothing there either. I don't have any slack anywhere and like I said earlier, it doesn't do it all the time, but more often than not. And it goes into drive smoothly every time so I'm scratching my head with it. I know i have something off though because two times this week already, the truck wouldn't turn over until I took the shifter and slammed it into Park. If I don't fix that, I'll have to start it in neutral very soon I think so I'll have to get my book out and start reading.

Since you mentioned that, I never paid attention to if it happens cold or not. Hmmm...
yea i dont know if its just my truck but from when its cold or running temp it has all different kinds of issues and they are always when it is at running temp
mine makes that ujoint slam too from reverse to drive and vise versa my u joints are new and from being under it and listening while its being shifted mine is in the t case. im guessin that my t case chain is gettin streched
yea that is what my machanic told me it was. so actually that kinda explains y it does it when its hot. as the chain heats up it expands and that is y i have the issue when it is hot. but i only have the problem going into reverse it comes out fine into any other gear

I could be wrong but it's my understanding the rear output is direct drive through gears and the front is by chain.
