What is wrong with kids?

Tyler Hadley, Florida Teen, Killed Parents, Then Had A Party: Police

I'd love to say it's a Gen Y thing, but my high school had a similar incident happen back in '93. I just don't get it.

I don't think kids/people just suddenly "SNAP". I think the writing is normally on the wall but friends/family don't read it or react in the right ways or in a timely manner. Simple explenation, huh?
Very tragic how a hard working family that appears to "have it all" can wind up like that. Sensless

Little or no discipline, little or no moral training, education system that builds high self-esteem but teaches kids to be self-centered and entitled to whatever they feel THEY need, too much time watching violent TV/Movies and playing video games that desensitize them to pain/death, and a society that thinks all this is just fine---I can't imagine why we're having so much trouble from kids today...

I was discussing this with a friend during lunch one day... Kids today have grown up in a society much different than any of us. How do we get back to a "better place", when the "cat" has been let out of the bag so to speak? I was born in '77 and growing up we had an Atari, NES, SNES.... but we spent the majority of our time playing outside than on the game box. Usually, we played video games at night after spending the entire day outside. Otherwise, I grew up hearing Korean war stories from my best friends' Great Uncle... and then we'd go dig fox holes in the ditch in the backyard, march around with our toy guns, and his Uncle would humor us and join in. We'd shoot BB guns, ride dirt bikes/mini bikes/go-carts, hike to our fort in the woods, ride bikes into town to get ice cream, skateboard, play street hockey... you get the jist.

Until parents give up the easy babysitters (video games/TV/internet), how will things ever change? And when will we go back to a time where kids are taught there are losers and winners in life (no, we don't all get trophies at the end of day)? We've set these kids up to fail.

This kid though, I can't even fathom the amount of FU he had to be in his head. I keep wondering if he did it because he wanted to have a party and his parents said no. I can't even imagine raising a child for 17 years and having him turn and do this. I'm just not able to wrap my head around his motives...

i agree on the parents not doing the right amount of discipline.... but the watching the stuff on TV/Internet makes no difference at all. it all depends on the parents. im only 18 and i grew up watching si-fi/horror/gang street violence type of movies. im not out running around doing that kinda stuff. i thank my step dad the most for me not being like most the % of kids that are messed up in the head today. he was born and raised a pennsylvanian and raised me up like one too but only in AZ lol. so like ive said before its all parental issues not always everything else society puts out, parents need to step in and say something.

I'm a huge horror film buff... watch stuff from the 60's and 70's and than compare to today's gore fest. Texas Chain Saw Massacre is remembered for being a gory film, when in fact, it isn't. A lot of horror classics involved making you think things. Directors figured out that people were closing their eyes during the "gory" scenes, so things are very much inferred. Consider the toe cutting scene in Hostel, nothing is really shown because they're counting on you to close your eyes. It's the illusion of gore.

Today's TV shows seem to run on gore, like CSI or Criminal Minds (I don't have cable so I can't say what's shown on there... and honestly, I don't watch TV much). Try watching old Dragnet episodes, the shows were just as entertaining, but the worst you saw was say, a women tied to a chair who was murdered (no blood), or some blood in cases of fist-a-cuffs. They weren't showing autopsies, visuals of bullets traveling through the body... none of that. The news today is also filled with the same thing, violence and gore. We've been desensitized to things... I didn't grow up watching this stuff on TV, we had Facts of Life, Silver Spoons, Family Ties, The Cosby Show... wholesome family fun, that everyone could watch together. All you find on network TV now is reality shows (with some of best losers than can locate it seems), crime shows (gore and violence), and comedies (low-brow, because apparently the world runs on the humor of grade schoolers). You're 18 and I'm 34... we grew up in two very different worlds, which is why I say, how do you change for the better? You see the things you grew up with as "normal" whereas to me, they are a far cry from my childhood.

yea i see were you are comming from there. i kno exactly what you are getting at. and i have no idea who comes up with the ideas and how it gets aired on television. i just know the crap there comming out with now all these sitcoms and cartoons are just down right stupid... the cartoons are poorley drawn and dumb to the point of dropping my IQ. i cant find a single channel with Looney tunes or all those old shows i use to love like flinstones or the jetsons, THAT is what i wish they would come out with more. but on the main point, yes alot has changed with everything and i dont kno how or why.

Parents probably said no to him havin a party and he freaked out. Have you seen kids shows and stuff lately, everyone acts like such a spastastic moron, freaking out at every little thing. Think a lot of it stems from how culture is now a days. Parents can't whoop there kids when they get out of line because its now child abuse, look at schools and such recently, you cant play dodgeball cause its almost like bullying, losing teams get trophies, seems like there is so much designed to shelter everyone from any bad feelings what so ever that when people do get upset, they don't know what to do and just absolutely freak the hell out. That and mass media glorifies violence, everyones gotta be tougher, meaner and more diabolical than before.

WINNING.

you hit it right on the money, kids nowadays are raised as if they cant do nothing wrong. they feel llike they can do what ever and get away with it. then when something happens that they dont like they go gawd dam ape! like example, i was al Wal-Mart yesterday and there was a little kid who wanted a bike and his mom said no.... he was yellin so loud you can hear it through the whole store. she didnt do anything about it she let him right on yellin. if i woulda pulled a stunt like that with my dad around well lets just say he was born and raised a pennslyvania mountain top man and raised me up just like he was.

Hadley told Mandell he contemplated killing his mother for about five minutes as he stood behind her while she was working on a computer.

"Then he decided to strike his mother in the back of the head with a hammer," the affidavit states. After a few strikes from the hammer, Hadley said his mother turned to him and asked, "Why?"

Hadley's father heard his wife scream and came out of the bedroom.
"Tyler told MM that he and his father stared into each other's eyes for a minute. Tyler said he then went after his father and murdered him," the affidavit states.

This right here made my stomach drop and I had to put my head in my hands. I just cannot imagine this. There is a special place in hell for this kid. No death penalty in Florida, so I hope he gets passed around like a hot potato in jail.

Blaming media outlets, video games and such is a scapegoat. Teenagers have a mind of their own and their actions are of their own free will. I agree with Dave, reunite this jackwagon with his folks immediately.
