97ford1 how the he-- did you get the sensors out? I can just barely get a wrench on the driver side one, the pasenger side one I can barely see. I have a '97 F150 5.4l 4X4. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again
I have read all the posts on this P0153 code and I'd like to ask a question about a problem I'm having. I am getting a "slow response" code for my 4.0 Ranger and put a FoMoCo O2 and the trouble code returned after a couple of drive cycles. I cleared the code and later it returned. I took the new replacement HO2S out of the right bank and put it in the left bank, swapping it side for side with the "good" sensor. The trouble code then followed the new sensor to that side. I then returned the sensors to their original sides and the code followed the new sensor back to the side it is installed in. Dealer says it is the right sensor (part number is the same except for suffix letters) and since it is an electrical part is not returnable after it has been installed. Any advice for me on this? TIA.

Nope, just keep clearing the trouble code when it reccurs. My driveability is fine and fuel mileage is staying at or around 27 mpg-pretty good for a 4.0. Still disappointed in my local Ford dealer, tho.
When I get an extra 85 bucks and change, I'll drive to the next town down the road and get another HO2S and try this all over again. Just with a different dealer. Same goes when I replace this Ranger with another new one. I have to order them ' because of how I like them spec'ed out. Their loss.
Wow i'm so glad i came across this site. You will all be hearing a lot from me!
Isant there 4 sensors in a 97 Mustang? So if your guestimating 80-100 for a 02 sensor, isant that more like 320-400 for all of them? (+ labor) That equals like a million trillion dollars!!
A friend did a diagnostic for me, and is showed the 02's were bad. (Just bought my 97 Ford Mustang GT) I have been saving the $ and just driving around my 2000 Mustang till I sold it yesterday. On my way into work, (driving the 97) I here poping noises. Not the kinda noise you get when you use crappy gas, but a kind of noise i have NEVER heard before. Just my luck. Any advice?
Has anyone actually driven around with a bad 02? I have for about a month. I just don't have the $ to buy the part nor the time to get screwed over by a salesman.

It kinda sounds like your O2 sent you rich and maybe melted your catalytic converter.Any other opinions?
As for the number of O2's,you should have 3 in a v-6,2 in a I-4. not sure about the v-8. Not likley that all are bad. Hit AutoZone and find out which are bad. They'll scan free. A 1997 should be an OBD-II system, more precise info. Good Luck.
On my 97 Expedition I pulled a trouble code P1151, the description was for the O2 sensor. Right below this code it showed P7100 ( Illegal trouble code ) & Pe500 with no description. I know what to do about the first codes but have no idea about the other two. Any help?
Speaking of codes...... I have a 1998 F-150 4x4 Ext cab w/4.6 engine. I have had troubles with engine spark knock, trouble codes,(PO 171,PO 174) have been told these are not the O2 sensors, etc. Now when I'm under heavy load, i.e. uphill, passing gear, etc. it feels like someone lays a wet blanket on my motor and just smothers it. When this happens, the spark knock completely quits, but the motor really bogs down. The truck has 131,000 miles on it and I love it. It's just a little frustrating when your baby "acts up". Any feedback would be appreciated.
P.S. I also changed the fuel filter and this didn't help at all!
Atom, with the mileage and the engine, I would suggest cleaning your egr ports.
Remove your egr valve, and there are two ports there going into the
throttle body. Take the throttle body off and clean the passage and
ports with a wire hanger or something like that. It'll take an hour or two.
I would bet money they are closed completely up with carbon. Also, clean your MAS.
Disconnect your negative battery cable while doing the work, then reconnect and let run 15 minutes to relearn. You'll be amazed.
