Hey folks, I've got a 1976 F-250 that's driving me up a wall. I have no dim headlights and cannot find the cause. I've changed the on/off switch and the dimmer switch + checked the fuses. Can anyone give me an idea what the problem might be and/or where to look to locate the electrical problem? All help appreciated.
I would double check the dimmer switch wiring, especially if it's mounted in the floor like I think yours is.
The headlight switch sends out voltage on a single wire to the dimmer switch. Two wires leave the switch. One high beam, the other low beam. The switch decides which wire will receive the voltage from the headlamp wire. So if your high beams work, then the problem is the switch or after the switch on the low beam wire.
I have had problems with bad connections at the dimmer switches mounted in the floor because of water leaks and corrosion. Since you replaced the dimmer switch, I would look at the wiring that plugs into the switch for a bad connection. You could also get a test light, and check to see if you are getting voltage on the wire at the switch.
If it looks good then there might a large plug on the firewall that is giving you a problem. Keep on following the wire, since it goes straight from the dimmer switch to the headlamps, testing for voltage along the way.
