newbe

hey guys, newbe here actualy im a newbe to fords an to diesels. dont get me wrong i used to be an auto mech. and have been into racing and offroading for years but as a chevy guy. i know, i know, thats blasphemy but what can i say, i dont think being a chevy guy is gonna change but i am starting to appreciate the fords more. i also went to school for diesel engines about 18yrs ago but havnt worked on one since and i know the technology has greatly increased since so ive got alot to learn and i hope you guys can help me.

anyway i just bought an 06 f-250 with the 6.0 and i have afew questions for yall. thetruck seems to be stock except for the exhaust which i belive is a bully dog setup. 4 inch pipe with the 5 inch tip. and i uderstand that maintenince is extremely important with these motors. i found the maint. log that the origonal ownerkept andit seems he was getting the oil and filter changed about every 6k miles butno record of tranny, fuel or air filters.

the few questions i have are
1-what should i expect problem wise on this truck?
2-do i need to use synthetic oil?
3-what would be a good maintence interval?
4-how often should i drain the water fuel seperator?
5-what kinda milage should i expect? so far im averageing about 13-15 around town and 20-24 on hwy.
6-im not looking for performance mods just soley looking for economy. any suggestions?

thanks in advance
Kris

Welcome to FTE.
Welcome to Ford.
Welcome to Diesel.

The most important thing for you is the year of your truck. What year do you have? The later years of the 6.0 were much better than the earlier models. But either motor will be a good one if taken care of. The transmission paired with your motor should be (If I am not mistaken) the TorqShift 5R100. A very good transmission by most peoples standards.

To answer your questions:
1-The 6.0 had some EGR issues. Jump over to the 6.0 Forum here and have a gander.
2-No. You do not HAVE to run synthetic. Many people here run dyno oil and report no problems and long engine life. Inversely, quite a few of us run full synthetic, myself included. A popular synthetic is the Shell Rotella T6, which is great stuff. When you run synthetic you can stretch out your OCI (Oil change intervals) to 10k, 15k, or even 20k depending on the condition of your motor. You can get a free oil test kit from blackstone labs and they will tell you how much longer you can run your synthetic oil.
3-Most people go based on what the Owners Manual says. OCI should be 5k for dyno oil, or longer for synthetic as I mentioned above. Transmissions get services every 30,000miles, and air and fuel filter around 15k.
4-When you change the fuel filter should be plenty.
5-Your current mileage is about what you would expect from a 6.0, which are usually pretty fuel efficient.
6-Depending on your current set up and needs you could re gear your rear axle. There arent a lot of things you can do to boost MPGs because engine manufacturers are very good at doing that themselves. There are small things you can do such as an exhaust (which you have) and upgraded air intake, and a tuner. Each of those will be negligible by themselves, but combined may produce up to 5MPG improvement. It is rare for a device to pay for itself in MPG increase very quickly.

Again, welcome to FTE. Your home for all diesel therapy needs!

I'm not sure if there are, since the stock filter is so big. However, many people find that reusable filters dont make much improvement in their engines performance. A replacement Motorcraft filter is about $50

2006 is right in the middle of its run and had some of the problems worked out by them. 106k isnt a lot of miles on a motor, especially if it was well cared for.

06 was the last of the engine run, even 07's have mod year 06 engines and have proven to be the most reliable of the 6.0's I've got 97k on mine and it has not been to the service dept fo any thing at all, I tow at maximum and have tuning and modifications I don't hesitate to drive that truck any where under any circumstances, I love it, and it's the most reliable truck I've ever owned, period. I use STD oil sample it at 6k with a filter change, usually drop the oil at 18k per sample suggestion, the air filters are excellent as is and don't bother until you get a light on dash or you are throwing away money, change trans filter at 30k it's a cartridge at front inside framerail pass.side, fuel filter every other oil filter and that's the interval, now the important part USE ONLY MOTORCRAFT OR RACOR FILTER ELEMENTS ON THIS ENGINE, it is a patented design that cannot be duplicated properly and copy's will not allow proper oiling if the filter should become clogged do not risk it!
