My buddy is looking at a '99 f250 with 200+k miles. The owner states that there is a tapping noise coming from one what he thinks is one of the heads. I think it its a bad injector does anyone else know what else could cause a tapping noise anywhere in the engine.
If its the rear of the drivers side head, Its most likely #8 injector.
Both of my 99's had the "tick"
Search "Injector cackle"
It may also be a lifter... without hearing it, its difficult to say exactly what it is.
Fan blade hitting the shroud, chunk of belt slapping something, collapsed lifter, bent pushrod, etc. More info is needed to make an informed analysis. Very well could be an injector gone bad or disassembling itself. A mechanics stethoscope or a long screwdriver held tight behind your ear and on various places on the engine can help locate the tapping. Give a good listen or record it, perhaps we can help. Where are you located?
And obviously the sound should weigh heavily in price negotiation. 200k is not a problem, btw.
Also I forgot to mention the owner stated that the tapping did not get louder or faster when the RPM's increased
HMMMM...does not increase with rpm's
I was going to suggest maybe a noisy TC, but I have no clue now.
I would love to listen to a video of the noise so we could help figure it out.
I would to. I am located in Acworth GA mt buddy just moved to Shreveport, LA and the truck is located in Somerset, TX thats why we are trying to figure out what the problem is and if its worth it to buy it.
Uppipes, exhaust manifold. This has happened on others on here and fixing this cured the problem. Is it all the time or when it gets warned up, hot.

Then check the push rods on what ever side it coming from. If its a real tap tap that goes up with rpm's, thats probably what it is. Some have had bent or broken push rods before even on stock set ups. Its a different sound then just a injector and needs attention now. Chet
