I posted a couple weeks ago regarding rebuilding my rear dif in my 03 SRW F350 PSD. I was quoted $22-2300 dollars to rebuild it utilizing stock Ford parts. A couple people recommended using a Trutrac as I pull a boat with it. I asked my mechanic to look into it and get back to me regarding his thoughts/opinions. I got a phone call yesterday (no phone call regarding his thoughts or asking for approval to go over the agreed upon price) stating that the job was finished and that not only was it $500.00 more, but the big kicker is that I couldnt pull my boat for 5000 miles for warranty issues. Had I known this I would have never approved it, as I live in Michigan and I get 3 months to use my boat. Theres absolutely no way I can put 5000 miles on it before the end of summer. My question is, what are the possible consequences (other than warranty) if I pull my boat without waiting? Thanks in advance for any thoughts/opinions that you have. -Eric

 

This is what i deduced after installing a Tru Trac, it is my opinion and not gospel.
In your case those, recommendations are from the installer cause he is going to have to send the unit back if there were a problem. Eaton will replace the part not pay the labour. The Eaton site says 1 yr. or 100 000 mi. warranty. It also says no breakin is required only that the unit will function better after some use. It also says to follow the Oem maintenance and fluid change procedures and spec. The ford manual does say not to tow for 500 or 1000 mi?
I changed out the gear oil at 500 mi. like you would with new gears [the unit is gear driven] and took Eatons word for it on the rest.

 

Did you get new ring and pinion put in as well? Those certainly have a break-in period, but I don't think that it anywhere near 5000 miles - probably closer to 1/10 that. Randy's Ring and Pinion has a FAQ that should cover that.
