NEED HELP QUICK---Power Steering

Hey Guys, Just went out and started to back out of the driveway and had NO power steering, and to my surprise, VERY LITTLE brakes. Noticed a leak on line going in to power steering pump on driver's side, down low, next to turbo tube. Looks like the line has slipped out of the coupling at the pump, but not all the way out. Whats the fix?? Are the brakes and steering both related to this leak?

Keep in mind I'm not a pro, just "old-school with a few tools"

Any and all help greatly appreciated! I really need my truck!

Yes they are connected Jim your going to have to replace the hose and flush it with transmission fluid not power steering fluid

Thanks for the reply. You mean flush the power steering pump with tranny fluid and then refill with power steering fluid?

Any idea how much a hose/line cost?

Megawatt, Do you mean flush the power steering pump as good as possible with transmission fluid and then refill with power steering fluid?

Any idea as to cost of a hose? Looks like I'm out of luck finding one tonight.

After replacing hose flush with tranny fluid and refill with tranny fluid. Our trucks don't use power steering fluid.

O'Riley's has the hose for around 30.00 and I am sure the others can do the same. That connection in the side of the pump is a swivel/O-ring setup and if the O-ring blows out, it is best to replace the hose back to the hydro-boost.
Not a bad job if you remove the lower air cooler hose on that side.
Do the flush as mentioned earlier and jack up the front end so you can cycle the steering back and forth.

Good luck

Could I possibly just replace the o-ring you think? I'll have to just work the steering on the ground and wear out the grass I guess.

There is an ring at the tip and a crush plastic ring that is on the outer nut. Best thing to do is just replace the whole line and be safe. It will come with all new O-rings.

Power Steering Pressure Line Replacement Update

I ended up not having to remove the air intake pipe. I just pulled it over a little bit and placed a small piece of wood between it and the bracket in front of the power steering pump to hold it. This gave me enough room to use an open end wrench to unscrew the line from the pump. The return line has enough length and flexibility to it that it allowed me to just pull it up and tie it off to a low profile drain pan that I use when changing oil in our vehicles. I sit the drain pan on top of the battery. The drain pan is black plastic with a small funneling hole in the center. The color black was not going to let me see when the fluid was clean as I flushed the system, so I simply got a white sheet of paper to let the fluid run over before it went through the hole in the drain pan. This let me see the color of the fluid really well. The nice lady that I've been married to (that has put up with me) for 36 years was kind enough to crank the truck and work the steering wheel back and forth from stop to stop while I kept an eye on things up front. It worked like a champ. I didn't even jack up the front end. The new couplers are a little stiff to turn with your fingers to get them to start threading but it went pretty good. I used dexIII/M fluid. Here is something I found for anyone doing this to keep in mind while placing the new line.

NOTE: When routing the new line (while bent over the driver's side fender), I noticed that if you aren't careful you will place it over some wiring clusters and the weight of the line itself could cause potential problems with these wires, so I would strongly suggest routing under the wires as you go back toward the hydroboost, which is probably how it was originally. It was hot out there and I just wanted to get it out of there.

Hope this might help someone down the line sometime!
