I have a 95 F150 4X4 (manual trans and manual hubs). The system gives great traction but, as expected, it hops whenever you try turning. I'm interested in a recent Ranger (2005 to 2008) and have two questions about the 4X4 system.
Do the auto hubs allow some slip to make parking lot driving easier?
How effective is the stock Ranger 4X4 system when it comes to traction on snow?
My Ranger is great in the snow. I've never been stuck in the 7 years that I've had it.
Especially in snow, I never notice the wheel hopping. When you turn at full lock you will notice the popping but under normal circumstances it does fine.
I've had an inside the rails toolbox for several years with plenty of tools (maybe 150-200lbs). I think that helps me a lot
As far as the hopping goes, the Ranger will be no different than an F150. The root cause of your problem is that you have 4WD engaged on (what sounds like) dry pavement.
You should NEVER drive in 4WD unless the tires can slip. If there is enough traction to cause hopping in 4WD, then you are risking damage to the transfer case. Solution? Use 2WD in this case.
