Sounds like the braking system is pretty high tech.
When did this thinking come about?
Does this mean IDI and early Powerstrokes had less than great braking capabilities?

I don`t know when that system became standard.
The IDI diesel brakes are not poor although some guys that do heavy towing convert to hydroboost for extra power assist.
I think you can ger aftermarket exhaust brakes for the earlier PSDs but not recommended for the IDI diesels.
If you do an advanced search for "exhaust brake" you will get a ton of info.
