I'm thinking of buying a camping trailer that weights 3080 lbs i have a 2002 for exp[orer 4.0 v6 with a 355 rear end does anyone know how this would pull the trailer
I cannot speak from personal experience, but I have a hunch that you would be disappointed in towing performance with that kind of weight. Looking in my manual, it looks like you have a towing capacity of 3400 lbs, which leaves only about 300 lbs for passengers and camping supplies.
I purchased my 2003 Explorer with intentions of getting a 3000 lb camping trailer in the future. So I decided to go with the V8 with its 7000 lb capacity to have plenty of margin. I would have been happy with an XLS model, but ended up having to get an EB model to get a V8 in the color my wife wanted (did a 150 mi. dealer search).
I towed an enclosed snowmobile trailer, two sleds & gear (2400lbs scale weight) all this winter w/ a 2002 V6 that had the upgraded tow package. Honestly, the rig did great, even in the mountains, but I wouldn't be comfortable towing much more than this setup. If I had ever thought I would, I definitely would have bought the V8. Also, is your XLS manual or auto/2WD or 4WD? Your answers are important in determining the correct towing capacity of your vehicle. Plus, watch those sales people who tell you "no problem" (it happened to a friend of mine). It will be you and your family driving down the highway! Good luck in your purchase.
