Passing gear shifting

This past week when coming back from a camping trip to Zion Nat. Park, I notice that the transmission shifting into the passing gear even on the slightest grade. I would try to back of the pedal to get it to go into a lower gear but this would not always work, when I got to flat ground it would shift down. Maybe this is normal but I don’t remember it doing that on the way there. Back ground information: 2001 Ford F150 2WD 5.4 towing a 2004 Thor Wanderer travel trailer with a dry weight of 3,800 lbs. The outside temp was 95 to 108. The transmission was just serviced before the trip. Any information or a way to check this or am I just making this into something it’s not? (I not sure if there is a vacuum pump for the passing gear that could be leaking?) Thanks for the help

Robert

The isn't really "passing gear". The tranny is shifting itself DOWN INTO A LOWER GEAR to save itself. Don't sweat it..... it's normal.

Your engine has trouble breathing in +100°F temps, just like I do. The hot air is less dense, and your engine has less power. That's why we love turbo-charged diesels for towing. Also, your cooling system is more efficient when the engine is turning higher RPM.

Sounds like your truck was doing exactly what it should do.
